Description

This Biomes Curriculum contains 7 units relating to biomes, ecology, and food chains specifically designed for students with special learning needs, especially those with autism who are in middle and high school.

The units were created using extended content state standards and are meant for students who take alternative assessments.

This Biomes curriculum addresses plants, animals, and the characteristics of different biomes and provides information on ecology and food chains.

 

This special education science curriculum covers 23 weeks of instruction.

 

In addition, many of these biome activities and assessments include more than one version, suggestions for differentiation, and options for presentation.

 

This Biomes curriculum includes print and digital versions of the activities. Each unit has a set of Google slides that includes a differentiated set of slides. A movie version of the book is included as well.

Much of what I have learned about curriculum development is incorporated into these units. For example, do not be afraid of repetition. It is critical that students with significant disabilities get to experience material over several days to be able to assimilate what is being taught fully. Also, adding visual supports to your printables and class activities helps students be able to pay more attention to the content you are presenting rather than the mechanics of what is expected. Finally, ask questions. Good questions!! Regardless of the material, asking students good questions will push them to think more deeply than before.

Each curriculum is made up of a set of resources. For example, The Layers of Earth Unit is considered one resource.

Each resource in the curriculum:

• Is intended to be used in one classroom
• Can be used for multiple years in the same classroom

• Use the resource in a new school
